how rabbits lost their voice

10.23.05

This summer, my writing students took a stab at writing fables. There are 14 students in the class, they are seniors. I let them work in pairs or on their own. They were given 3 titles to choose from: How Rabbits Lost Their Voice, When People Forgot How to Fly, and Why the Sky Is Blue. They wrote the stories and I edited them, then they wrote and illustrated the pages of their book, which I showed them how to construct.

The following story won the award for "Best Humor." I hope that you can see why. . .and it wasn't because of the last panel.

[An introduction to the story written in Japanese. The book was put on display--along with all the others--at the school's culture festival. The introduction was for the benefit of those who wouldn't be able to follow the story...ie. the rest of the school.]

Once upon a time, rabbits had voices and they could talk.

However, the rabbits were very nasty.

They were troublemakers.

The rabbits spoke ill of everyone.

The other animals were at a loss as to how to deal with the rabbits. They asked God to help them.

God became angry, so he cast magic on the rabbits.

The bewitched rabbits lost their voices.

Since then, rabbits have been depressed. They smoke cannabis, and that is why their eyes are red.
